font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Airflow obstruction occurs most often in men and in people with asthma, recurrent respiratory infections, occupational exposure to dust, and a family history of lung disease.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">As a group, people with severe alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency who have never smoked have a normal life expectancy and only moderate decline in lung function. <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"><b>The most common cause of death in alpha-1<\/b><\/span> <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"><b>antitrypsin deficiency is emphysema, followed by cirrhosis, often with hepatocellular carcinoma.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89a314a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"89a314a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is the medical treatment?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b291020 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b291020\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Treatment of lung disease consists of the administration of purified human alpha-1 antitrypsin, which can maintain the serum alpha-1 antitrypsin concentration above an ideal protective concentration.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Because emphysema causes permanent structural change, treatment cannot repair damaged lung structure or improve lung function, but it is given to stop progression. Treatment is expensive and therefore is reserved for patients who do not smoke and have two abnormal alleles, mild to moderately abnormal lung function, and confirmation of the diagnosis by serum alpha-1 antitrypsin levels. It is not indicated for patients who have severe disease or for whom one or both alleles are normal.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"><b>Smoking cessation, use of bronchodilators, and early treatment of respiratory infections are important for patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and emphysema.<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Treatment of liver disease is supportive.
