font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">The highest mortality rates attributable to nitrogen dioxide (NO2).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"><b>It is a toxic gas mainly associated with motor vehicle traffic.<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">This was found in the big cities of countries such as Spain, Belgium, Italy and France, with the highest percentage (7%) of natural mortality attributable to NO2 found in Madrid, Spain.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\"><i>\u201cThis study supports the evidence showing that there is no safe exposure threshold below which air pollution is not harmful to human health.<\/i><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"><b>It also shows that current European legislation does not sufficiently protect people&#8217;s health and that the maximum levels of NO2 and PM2.5 allowed by law should be reviewed.<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\"><i>We hope that the European Commission will present the most ambitious possible proposals for the revision of the EU Ambient Air Quality Directives, which will be based on the latest cutting-edge science on the health effects of air pollution.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b291020 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b291020\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3 dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traducci\u00f3n\"><span lang=\"en\">An action plan is urgent<\/span><\/h3><p>This study provides, for the first time, detailed data for more than 1,000 cities in Europe.<\/p><p>Thanks to this data, efforts by local authorities to implement urban and transport planning policies aimed at reducing air pollution and improving people&#8217;s health can be boosted.<\/p><p>Huge health benefits would be realized if cities intensify their efforts to tackle air pollution.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51512f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"51512f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The health effects of air pollutionProposal to improve air quality<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd4dbfe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd4dbfe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>To improve air quality and protect human health, t<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">he ERS Health and Environment Committee recommends that legislators:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );
