(AATD) is one of these rare conditions that can significantly affect health and affect the quality of life of those who suffer from it.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">The population most at risk of serious complications needs special measures to prevent or reduce serious diseases and mortality.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e717a5a elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"e717a5a\" #00635b;\"><b>Paradigm shift<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><b>Rare diseases are often a topic that is rarely discussed in society due to their relatively low prevalence.<\/b><\/p><p>The burden of such conditions is not about numbers, but about a person&#8217;s life, which can be significantly affected by delayed diagnosis and limited access to treatment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e4e08f7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e4e08f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #00635b;\"><b>Diagnosis and treatment<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Without proper treatment and care, patients may have a shortened life expectancy and suffer severe shortness of breath, immobility, recurrent hospital admissions, and may eventually require a lung transplant.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In addition to causing serious lung disease in adults, AATD can also cause liver damage in adults and children who may also require a liver transplant, and that is why today we want to publicize this chronic and inherited disease.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d499424 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d499424\" data-element_type=\"section\" 1<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><b>Today, April 25, 2021, we want to publicize this very common disease in individuals of Iberian and Northern European descent.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Despite its prevalence in Europe, patients and healthcare providers remain misinformed about the disorder, and therefore an overwhelming number of people are misdiagnosed as Alpha-1 patients.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-016e3b4\" data-id=\"016e3b4\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1c6d4c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f1c6d4c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i>Currently, Alpha-1 has no cure, however, there are treatments developed to coexist with this disease.<\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b1923a1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b1923a1\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column forward<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ce1f17 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9ce1f17\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of the most progressive treatments for Alpha-1 affected patients is plasma-derived therapy to restore the normal level of AAT, which slows the progression of lung damage and cures panniculitis of the skin.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b291020 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b291020\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote><h3>Policies on Alpha-1 Diagnosis, Treatment, and Care<\/h3><\/blockquote><p>Policies vary across Europe, as each country has its own healthcare system and policy for rare diseases.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Despite the promising results and cost-effectiveness of augmentation therapy, only a few countries reimburse the treatment,<\/span><b style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"> fortunately Spain is one of them.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3605774 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3605774\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><i>Recommendations<\/i><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e82a260 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e82a260\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Without timely diagnosis and proper treatment, the lives of many patients are at risk. Currently, AATD is a largely underrecognized and therefore underdiagnosed condition that requires immediate action by member state governments to improve the lives of those affected.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Together with the European Alpha-1 Awareness Day and through the Recommendations of the European Alpha-1 Expert Group, the following is provided:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7113e19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7113e19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Recommendations for Policy Makers<\/h3><ul><li>All Member States should develop an Alpha-1 diagnosis programme in their rare disease plan.
